F.A.Q.

Recruitment FAQs:

Q: How do I join a sorority?
A: We have deferred recruitment at Wash. U., which means you cannot go through recruitment until at least your second semester. Formal recruitment takes place every January and this is how the majority of women join sororities.

Q: When is recruitment?
A: Recruitment takes place every January one week before spring semester classes begin.

Q: What requirements are there for going through recruitment?
A: All women going through recruitment need to have completed at least 12 credit hours of college work with a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Q: How do I register for recruitment?
A: Registration for recruitment will be open from November 1st to December 1st on the Panhellenic website. You can also come by the Greek Life Office in the DUC to pick up a paper registration form.

Q: Is recruitment only for second-semester freshmen?
A: Not at all! Every year we have sophomores, transfer students, and January-program scholars go through recruitment.

Q: Are recommendation letters required for recruitment?
A: None of the sororities at Wash. U. require letters of recommendation. Most women go through the recruitment process without any letters. All of the sororities will accept letters written by alumnae of their chapter and submitted through the chapter's inter/national office.

Q: Can exchange students join sororities?
A: Panhellenic will allow international students to register for an participate in recruitment, but it is unlikely that any chapter will want to extend a bid to a woman who will only be active in the chapter for a semester of year.

Q: My question isn't answered on this page, what do I do?
A: Email Melissa Bryan, VP Recruitment at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and she will cheerfully reply to your inquiry!

General FAQs

Q: Will my academics suffer if I join a sorority?
A: Greeks continue to achieve above the all-campus average for GPAs each semester. Many women find that joining a sorority provides additional resources and support inside the classroom as well as outside it.

Q: I don't want to be hazed. What should I do?
A: Washington University holds its Greek members to a strict no-hazing policy and takes reports of inappropriate behavior seriously. For further information, please review Washington University's hazing policies.

Q: Are there sorority houses at Wash. U.?
A: There are not houses for any of the sororities on campus. Each sorority, however, has its own suite in the Ann Olin Women's Building on campus. These non-residential living rooms each have a small kitchen and serve as a space for sisters to conduct meetings, study, relax and hold sisterhood events.

Q: What percentage of Washington University students are members of the Greek system?
A: Over 25% of the undergraduate population belongs to fraternities and sororities.
